Winterize Your Home for Reduced Heating Costs
It’s almost that time of year again. Time for those of us in northern climates to prepare for our annual battle against old man winter. Soon the shovels and plows will be out in force, and we’ll be looking for every conceivable way to keep our homes warm without breaking the bank.
But as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure. Taking the time to winterize your home before the mercury drops can go a long way in reducing the amount of energy needed to stay warm. Take a look at these quick and easy tips to reduce your home heating costs:
- Clean the Gutters: Your home’s rain gutters only function properly when they are free of obstructions and debris. Clogged gutters can cause snow and ice to freeze into ice dams, leading to roof damage and leaks. Remove any debris from your home’s gutters and spray them clean with your garden hose to prevent buildup.
- Block the Leaks: The average home has enough leaks in it to equal a nine foot hole in the wall. Walk around your home on a windy day with a candle or stick of incense to identify any leaky areas. Common problem areas include recessed lighting fixtures, window and door frames, and electrical outlets. Seal the leaks with foam insulation spray, rolled insulation, door sweeps, outlet gaskets, and curtains to reduce the amount of heat your home will lose.
- Check the Insulation: Make sure your home has adequate insulation for the climate you live in. In northern climates, a minimum of 12 inches of insulation is recommended for attics – the most likely area for heat loss. Consult an expert at your local home improvement center or neighborhood hardware store for advice on installing additional insulation.
- Service the Furnace: Double check your home’s furnace to make sure it is working properly. Spending $100 to $150 to have a heating specialist clean and service the furnace is also recommended. They will ensure the furnace is operating efficiently, and can identify any possible problems before you are left in the cold.
Following these recommendations can pay huge dividends when the temperature really drops. Scratch these off your to-do list early, however, as trying to clean out a gutter in the middle of a snowstorm is no fun whatsoever.
